I sit down finally to write my post today after a morning full of helping my mom with dirty clothes. In my frustration to get away from it, I had asked her irritably " Who invented clothes anyway?! Wouldn't it be great to live a nomadic life?". I was laughed at on asking this. Mom always regarded washing as a form of exercise. One might wonder what sort of exercise one had to go through to wash clothes. I guess most of us do not have the trouble of doing this chore ourselves. We either have a machine or we employ manual labor. If we jump back a decade or two, when machines were still regarded as some sort of heinous crime to turn to for washing, we can get an entirely different picture of cleaning clothes. The process involved many steps, starting from soaking the dirty pile in a pail of detergent and water mixture, taking them to the washing stone to beat and get the dirt out of it, rinsing the clothes thrice to make sure all the soap has gone, hanging the clothes to dry neatly using pegs, and finally folding and keeping them at the right place in the closet. Phew!! Who has time to do all these now? But trust me, my mom does though she is a working woman. She says she has been doing this for around thirty years. She is still fit and strong and very energetic for a person who is fast approaching her menopause. I look at her in amazement wondering what i might be in her age. Not only my mother, I have seen many supermoms who do household chores in the wink of an eye. They do not workout or have a membership of any fitness center. They still manage to stay in shape. When I look at them, I can only say that we have become slaves to modern gadgets and machinery. We never have time to thank our mothers for all the work they do. I can rightly say they all deserve our appreciation. So next time when you open your closet to pull out your favorite dress, make sure to remember the washing ordeal it had gone through and your mom's kindness that comes along with the smell of fabric conditioner... !!
